Benchmark indices are a collection of stocks or other instruments that show how a market or part of a market is performing. They are used to evaluate the performance of investment portfolios relative to the market or a specific sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Friday, benchmark equity indices are rising. The BSE Sensex is trading at 67,437.61, up 449.17 points, while the NSE Nifty 50<\/a> surged 0.78% to reach a new high of 20,291.55 during intraday trade. Currently, it is trading at 20,264.85, up 0.65%. Among the larger indices, midcap and smallcap equities are contributing the most to the gains. The Bank Nifty index has increased by 345.65 points, or 0.78%, to 44,827.40. With increases of more than 1% apiece, Media, PSU Bank, Metal, FMCG, and Financial Services companies are outperforming the other sectoral indexes, while IT and Auto stocks are trending lower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most actively traded equities on the NSE<\/a> are Tata Tech, PFC, HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank, REC, and Axis Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
