On March 22, 1966, he was born in Oakland, California. When he was younger, he played basketball at the East Oakland Youth Development Center. Shaw went to Westlake Middle School and Bishop O’Dowd High School. He spent his first and second years at St. Mary’s College of California in Moraga after high school. Shaw then went to work for the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he took the Gauchos basketball team to the NCAA playoffs for the first time.

Brian Shaw first took part in Strongman events in 2005. After winning his first show without training, he was so driven that in just one year he was ready to fight pros.
